Dust temperature and the submillimetre–radio flux density ratio as a redshift indicator for distant galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
It is difficult to identify the distant galaxies selected in existing submillimetre-wave surveys, because their positions are known at best to only several arcseconds. Centimetrewave VLA observations are required in order to determine positions to subarcsecond accuracy, and so to allow reliable optical identifications to be made. Carilli & Yun pointed out that the ratio of the radio to submillimetre-wave flux densities provides a redshift indicator for dusty star-forming galaxies, when compared with the tight correlation between the far-infrared and radio flux densities observed in low-redshift galaxies. This method does provide a useful, albeit imprecise, indication of the distance to a submillimetre-selected galaxy. Unfortunately, it does not provide an unequivocal redshift estimate, as the degeneracy between the effects of increasing the redshift of a galaxy and decreasing its dust temperature is not broken.

متن کاملThe temperature dependence of the far-infrared–radio correlation in the Herschel-ATLAS
We use 10,387 galaxies from the Herschel Astrophysical TeraHertz Large Area Survey (HATLAS) to probe the far-infrared radio correlation (FIRC) of star forming galaxies as a function of redshift, wavelength, and effective dust temperature. All of the sources in our 250μmselected sample have spectroscopic redshifts, as well as 1.4 GHz flux density estimates measured from the Faint Images of the R...
متن کاملConstraining the Radio - Submillimetre Redshift Indicator using data from the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy
Many of the faint submm sources uncovered by deep SCUBA surveys still remain unidentified at most, if not all other wavelengths. The most successful method so far of obtaining accurate positions and hence allowing more secure identifications has been to use centimetre wavelength imaging with the VLA. This has led to a tempting approach for obtaining redshift estimates for this population (Caril...
متن کاملMillimetric properties of gamma ray burst host galaxies
We present millimetre (mm) and submillimetre (submm) photometry of a sample of five host galaxies of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), obtained using the MAMBO2 and SCUBA bolometer arrays respectively. These observations were obtained as part of an ongoing project to investigate the status of GRBs as indicators of star formation. Our targets include two of the most unusual GRB host galaxies, selected as...

We present the discovery of a dusty quasar, SMM J04135+10277, located behind the galaxy cluster Abell 478. The quasar was discovered as the brightest source in a submillimetre survey of high redshift galaxies lensed by foreground rich clusters of galaxies in a project aimed at studying the cosmic star formation history of dusty galaxies. With submillimetre fluxes of S 850 = 25 ± 2.8 mJy and S 4...
